Positionality statement

The topic of women of colour has been something I have learned about throughout my education at TRU. Being a sociology major it allows me to dig deeper into these issues and uncover the oppressions and injustices women of colour have to face. Although I have never had to deal with this myself I find it a very important topic that needs to be made aware to more people. After taking a few courses that touched on this topic I wanted to learn more about it and find out the issues that have to face. Something I found interesting was a podcast by bell hooks titled “feminism is for everybody” I highly recommend listening to it for those wanting to learn more about this topic. Although I can’t imaging the difficulties women of colour have had to face and how it impacts them I have experienced it happen to a few of my coworkers. I have been at work when people have made comments to my coworkers and luckily my manager was there to deal with the situation. She informed the customer that comments like that will not be tolerated and informed them of the impact their comment made. This was really upsetting because it wasn’t the first time it has happened. People either don’t understand or don’t care about the impact their comment has on a person which is why we need to say something if we see or hear acts of discrimination.
